Dora
R. Hill Dillistone
Houston, Texas and Taos, New Mexico
As a female born in the post World War II era, growing up in the 1950's
and maturing in the 60's I was instilled with the need for constant
questioning and change. The 1970's helped shape my philosophical
approach to life and art. After teaching high school art for several
years, I realized that something was missing. That something was
the time to make art. Several events helped shape my current direction. After
teaching, I spent time living and painting in the New Mexico mountains
which had a great impact on my sense of space and light. Returning,
I left post graduate work at UH and enhanced my education at the MFAH
Glassell School. In the summer of 2000, I had the opportunity to
work and learn in the Taos studio of Larry Bell. This presented
an entirely new direction of work while enhancing the continuing painting. A
profound change occurred under the guidance of Christian Eckart who
encouraged new directions and insight. Emergence and submergence,
light and space, mortality and immortality remain the underlying themes.
